Sample Answers for Other Roles

Intermediate · 16 min read · Question Bank by Theme, Practise

Strong answers from frontend, mobile, data and SRE engineers, so you can see the pattern in your own field.

Most sample answers in this course come from a backend engineer. The shape of a strong answer doesn't change with your role, but the evidence does. A frontend engineer's numbers are load times and conversion; a data engineer's are freshness and correctness; an SRE's are error budgets and recovery time.

What counts as impact in each role

Frontend: impact

"I cut our product page's load time roughly in half, which measurably lifted conversion.

Mobile: failure

"I shipped an app release that crashed on launch for about 8% of Android users. I caused it.

Data engineering: ownership

"I took ownership of our daily revenue numbers being wrong a few times a month, which no single team owned.

SRE: conflict

"I disagreed with a product team that wanted to launch despite having used up their error budget. We found a middle path.

QA / SDET: leadership

"I got our backend teams to own their API tests, which cut the escaped defects we were finding.

Key takeaways

  • The STAR shape is the same in every role; the evidence changes.
  • Learn your role's measures: frontend load time and conversion, mobile crash-free users, data freshness and correctness, SRE availability and recovery time, QA escaped defects.
  • Pair a technical number with a user or business consequence.
